he People's Republic of China established diplomatic relations with the Republic of Gambia on December 14th, 1974. However, the Gambian Government established diplomatic ties with the Taiwan authority on July 13th, 1995. Therefore, China had to suspend the diplomatic relations with The Gambia on July 25th 1995.
During the period when China and Gambia maintained diplomatic relations, Mr. Ji Pengfei, Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress paid a visit to Gambia in December 1978. Major visits to China from the Gambian sides included the President Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara (in June 1975, April 1987, July 1988 and May 1991 respectively), Mr. Alieu Badara N'jie, Minister of Foreign Affairs (in January-February 1975), and Mr. Momodou Baboucarr N'jie, Speaker of the Congress (in September 1987).
On March 17th, 2016, the Republic of The Gambia and China resumed diplomatic ties. The bilateral cooperation between The Gambia and China has yielded tremendous fruits over a short period of time since the resumption of diplomatic ties. The Gambia adheres to the One-China principle and as such China is ready to work with The Gambia to continue steering bilateral ties and enhance political mutual trust.
On March 17, 2016, Foreign Minister Wang Yi signed a "Joint Communiqué Between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of The Gambia on Resumption of Diplomatic Relations" in Beijing with Foreign Minister Neneh MacDouall-Gaye of Gambia, and the two countries resumed diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level as of the date of the signing of the Joint Communiqué.
