On 14, December 1974, China and Gambia signed the joint communiqué on establishing diplomatic relations.

On 17th March 2016, The Gambia and China signed the joint communiqué on reestablishing diplomatic relations

In 2017, The Gambia and China signed an Agreement on Mutual visa exemption for holders of Diplomatic, Service passports and passports for Public Affairs.


The Gambia and China signed the following Cooperation Agreements during President Adama Barrow’s state visit to China in December 2017:


1.     Agreement between the Government of the Republic of The Gambia and the Government of the People’s Republic of China on Mutual visa exemption for holders of Diplomatic, Service passports and passports for Public Affairs; - the agreement has entered into force last week

2.     Agreement between Confucius Institute Headquarters of People’s Republic of China and University of The Gambia on the Establishment of Confucius Institute at The University of The Gambia;

3.     Agreement on Economic and Technical Cooperation Between the Government of the People’s Republic of China and the Government of the Republic of The Gambia;

4.     The Memorandum of Understanding on Economy, Trade, Investment and Technical Cooperation between the Government of the Republic of The Gambia and the Government of the People’s Republic of China;

5.     Framework Agreement between the Government of the People’s Republic of China and the Government of the Republic of The Gambia on provision of Concessional Loan by China to The Gambia and;

6.     Memorandum of Understanding on Human Resource Development Cooperation between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad of the Republic of The Gambia and the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China


The First Joint Commission on Economic, Trade, Investment and Technical Cooperation between the Government of the Republic of The Gambia and the Government of the People’s Republic of China was convened in Beijing, China, from 11th to 15th June 2018. The Joint Commission follows the signing, on 21st December 2017, of an Agreement of Cooperation between the Gambian and Chinese Sides to facilitate formal bilateral economic and trade engagements between the two Governments.
