On March 17^th, 2016, the Republic of The Gambia and China resumed diplomatic ties. The bilateral cooperation between The Gambia and China has yielded tremendous fruits over a short period of time since the resumption of diplomatic ties. The Gambia adheres to the One-China principle and as such China is ready to work with The Gambia to continue steering bilateral ties and enhance political mutual trust.

On March 17, 2016, Foreign Minister Wang Yi signed a "Joint Communiqué Between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of The Gambia on Resumption of Diplomatic Relations" in Beijing with Foreign Minister Neneh MacDouall-Gaye of Gambia, and the two countries resumed diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level as of the date of the signing of the Joint Communiqué.
